Blog Post Assignment 5

Quote 1: "When I was a senior in high school, she didn't ask where I would like to go to college. She didn't take me on a tour. I didn't even know people went on tours until I went to college and others told me they'd gone on them. I was left to figure it out on my own."

Question 1: The theme I perceived from this quotation was to appreciate your parents as well as to not take them for granted. Cheryl's mother did not expose her to the college life nor did she push her or motivate her to go. Most parents encourage one to go to college and to explore options.
Question 3: This quotation has a conflict between Cheryl and her mother. Cheryl faults her mother for not being an actual parent when it came to being concerned about her future.

Quote 2: "I never got to to be in the driver's seat of my own life," she'd wept to me once, in the days after she learned she was going to die. "I always did what someone else wanted me to do. I've always been someone's daughter or mother or wife. I've never just been me."

Question 1: The theme that stood out to me for this particular quotation is to live for yourself, make yourself happy, and do what is best for you.
Question 2: This quotation characterizes Strayed's mother. Barbara was never the person she really wanted to be. She always did what others wanted her to do and did not consider her own wants. She just played a role of a mother, wife, or someone's daughter, but she was never Barbara.

The Middle Ages was a period of European history from around the fifth century through the fifteenth century. In this period of time, women came second to men in all circumstances. The role of  a woman usually ranged from being a wife, mother, peasant, artisan, and nun. A woman usually married young and the marriage was arranged by her family. Women in the Middle Ages had no direction of life or freedom and her life was often lead by biblical text. For example, writings of Apostle Paul emphasized the ruling of men over women and how women were forbidden from speaking and teaching. The small amount of women who did choose to exercise any form of power only did so in church due to the fact that abbesses had seniority over monks in some instances, or if they were queens. Overall, Medieval England was not a comfortable place for majority of women; Women often did not control the direction in which their lives took, society was dominated by men, and women had no choice but to acce...

Geoffrey Chaucer Summary

Geoffrey Chaucer, poet and writer, has been known as the father of literature as well as the prime shaper of the English language. He has also been recognized for his achievement of being the greatest poet of medieval England, although, his work is not always understood. Chaucer's poetry also reflects many sources such as: Latin, French, and Italian, and also folk tales, sermons, rhetorical textbooks, and ribald jokes. His poems are narrated by naive persona and often left unfinished which allows the reader to become creative. His use of narrators is also key in his works; Chaucer's attitude can never be depicted because he stands behind his narrators which makes his narrators very effective.
